Tatami parameters
Tatami fill: rows of running stitches across the fill’s area, the needle points of neighbouring rows offset so that they never line up. Ink/Stitch’s default fill.
Applies to Tatami fill.
Rows
angle
Angle. The direction of the rows, in degrees counter-clockwise from horizontal: 0 sews horizontal rows and 90 upright ones.
- Accepts: an angle in degrees
- Default:
0 - Ink/Stitch: same key, meaning and default
row_spacing_mm
Row spacing. How far apart the rows are, measured square to them. Rows closer together cover the fabric more fully, and pull it in more.
- Accepts: a length from 0.1 to 100 mm
- Default:
0.25 - Ink/Stitch: same key and default; StitchCraft differs:
- DEV-FILL-012. A point of a part’s outline within 1e-9 mm of a row lies on it, and a row within 1e-9 mm of the part’s far side lies on that side and is left out. Each row lies a whole number of row spacings past the part’s first row, multiplied out. Ink/Stitch adds the row spacing in CSS pixels from row to row, and cuts each row with the part exactly, once the part is put on a grid of 1e-10 pixels. So a row on a side runs along it, crosses the part a hair beside it or misses it as the numbers round, and a part can have a row a hair inside its far side.
end_row_spacing_mm
End row spacing. The spacing of the last rows, for a fill that fades: from the first row the spacing changes steadily towards it, reaching it the part’s height away, in each part of the fill. Empty, every row is the row spacing from the next.
- Accepts: a length from 0.1 to 100 mm, or empty (0 or less counts as empty)
- Default: empty
- Ink/Stitch: same key; StitchCraft differs:
- DEV-FILL-003. With end_row_spacing_mm, the step from row to row changes from the row spacing to the end spacing over the part’s height, measured from the first row, and stays at the end spacing beyond it. Ink/Stitch carries the change on past the height, which reaches the rows within a row spacing of the part’s far side when the first row lies before the part. With an end spacing smaller than the row spacing, over a part a few rows tall, the steps then shrink towards 0 and the rows pile up short of the far side without end.
- DEV-PRM-003. An optional length below 0 is read as not set, as 0 is, and SC-W0102 says so. Ink/Stitch reads it as a length and sews what that gives: with a min_jump_stitch_length_mm below 0, it ties off, jumps and ties in between every 2 groups of stitches.
expand_mm
Expand. How far past the drawn edge the top rows reach: each part is grown by this much, with round corners, before its rows are laid. The thread’s pull opens gaps between fills sewn side by side, and this closes them. Negative values pull the rows in from the edge.
- Accepts: a length from -10 to 10 mm
- Default:
0 - Ink/Stitch: same key and default; StitchCraft differs:
- DEV-FILL-008. Where fill_underlay_inset_mm, or a negative expand_mm, cuts a part into pieces, the pieces are sewn in order of their point of least x, and of least y among pieces level with each other, each with its least x within a nanometre of the one before. GEOS gives them in the order it walks its graph, which Ink/Stitch sews them in. Of 2,000 random polygons grown or shrunk, 85 gave 2 or more pieces, and 81 of those came in the same order; the 4 others had a sliver among their pieces. For pieces level at their least x, GEOS’s order turns on where the ring’s points start: 2 squares one above the other, shrunk apart, give the lower first when the ring is listed from the bottom and the upper first when it is listed from the top, and 310 of 400 random such shapes, listed from random points, gave the lower first. Each piece’s top rows start at the point nearest the needle after the piece before, where Ink/Stitch starts every piece’s top rows nearest the needle as it was before the first.
gap_fill_rows
Gap-filling rows. Rows sewn again where the fill leaves a stretch of more than 3 rows for another: that many rows past the stretch’s last row, back and forth, before the needle travels on. The rows on the far side are sewn later, and the fabric between can be pulled apart by then; these close the gap. Rounded up to an even number, so the needle comes back to where the stretch ended.
- Accepts: a whole number from 0 to 100
- Default:
0 - Ink/Stitch: same key and default; StitchCraft differs:
- DEV-FILL-010. Each gap-fill row is the next row of the grid past the stretch’s last row, the stretch of its segment beside the gap-fill row before it, or the last row for the first, so it stops at the part’s edge, and the rows stop where the part ends. Ink/Stitch repeats the last row, moved a spacing further each time and keeping its length, so a repeat can run outside the part; its spacing is the distance between the last 2 rows, where the grid’s rows follow the end row spacing. The hops between gap-fill rows and the way back are running stitches kept inside the part as travel is, where Ink/Stitch stitches them as rows, straight.
Stitches
staggers
Staggers. How many rows the needle points take to come back to where they started. Along each row they lie
the longest stitch (max_stitch_length_mm) apart, a staggers-th of a stitch along from the
row before’s, so that neighbouring rows never line them up. A fraction draws diagonals that show
less than whole numbers do. A negative number staggers the rows the other way, and 0 counts as 1,
which lines every row’s points up, as in Ink/Stitch.
- Accepts: a number from -100 to 100
- Default:
4 - Ink/Stitch: same key, meaning and default
skip_last
Skip last stitch. Leave out the needle point at the end of each row. It lies close to the start of the next row, and leaving it out lowers the stitch count and the density along the fill’s edge.
- Accepts: true or false, in any case, or yes, y, t or 1 for true and no, n, f, 0 or off for false
- Default:
false - Ink/Stitch: same key, meaning and default
Travel
underpath
Underpath. Travel between rows runs inside the fill, under rows sewn after it, which hide it. Off, the needle travels along the fill’s outline, where the travel can show along the edge.
- Accepts: true or false, in any case, or yes, y, t or 1 for true and no, n, f, 0 or off for false
- Default:
true - Ink/Stitch: same key and default; StitchCraft differs:
- DEV-FILL-011. With underpath off, or in a part the gratings of lines miss, the needle travels between 2 points of one ring the shorter way round it, by length, and on a tie the way that does not pass the ring’s start. Ink/Stitch’s travel along the outline counts nodes instead: its graph has a node every CSS pixel along the outline’s sides, and at their corners and the rows’ ends, and its edges carry no length, so the way with fewer nodes is taken. That is about the shorter way, but a way past many short sides, as round a curve drawn in short pieces, has more nodes for its length, and the way with fewer nodes can be the longer.
- DEV-FILL-013. In a part the gratings of lines miss, with underpath on, the needle travels along the part’s rings, as with underpath off. Ink/Stitch also travels along the outline there, but it smooths every way it travels with underpath on, as it smooths a way under the rows: the way cuts the outline’s corners inside the part, and is kept inside it where it leaves it.
Underlay
fill_underlay
Underlay. Sew underlay before the top rows: rows of stitches farther apart than the top rows, square to them unless set otherwise. It holds the fabric still while the fill is sewn and lifts the top rows, so less fabric shows between them.
- Accepts: true or false, in any case, or yes, y, t or 1 for true and no, n, f, 0 or off for false
- Default:
true - Ink/Stitch: same key, meaning and default
fill_underlay_angle
Underlay angle. The direction of the underlay’s rows, in degrees counter-clockwise from horizontal. Several angles separated by spaces sew a layer of underlay at each, one after another. Empty: square to the top rows, at the fill’s angle plus 90°.
- Accepts: 1 to 16 angles in degrees, separated by spaces, or empty
- Default: empty
- Ink/Stitch: same key, meaning and default
fill_underlay_row_spacing_mm
Underlay row spacing. How far apart the underlay’s rows are, measured square to them. Empty: 3 times the row spacing.
- Accepts: a length from 0.1 to 100 mm, or empty (0 or less counts as empty)
- Default: empty
- Ink/Stitch: same key and default; StitchCraft differs:
- DEV-PRM-003. An optional length below 0 is read as not set, as 0 is, and SC-W0102 says so. Ink/Stitch reads it as a length and sews what that gives: with a min_jump_stitch_length_mm below 0, it ties off, jumps and ties in between every 2 groups of stitches.
fill_underlay_max_stitch_length_mm
Underlay longest stitch. How far apart the needle points along the underlay’s rows are. Empty: the fill’s longest stitch
(max_stitch_length_mm).
- Accepts: a length from 0.1 to 25 mm, or empty (0 or less counts as empty)
- Default: empty
- Ink/Stitch: same key and default; StitchCraft differs:
- DEV-PRM-003. An optional length below 0 is read as not set, as 0 is, and SC-W0102 says so. Ink/Stitch reads it as a length and sews what that gives: with a min_jump_stitch_length_mm below 0, it ties off, jumps and ties in between every 2 groups of stitches.
fill_underlay_inset_mm
Underlay inset. How far inside the fill’s edge its underlay stops: each part is shrunk by this much, with round corners, before the underlay’s rows are laid, so that none of the underlay shows beyond the top rows. Negative values let it reach past the edge.
Each piece’s top rows start at the point nearest the needle after the piece before, where Ink/Stitch starts every piece’s top rows nearest the needle as it was before the first.
fill_underlay_skip_last
Skip last underlay stitch. Leave out the needle point at the end of each underlay row, as skip_last does for the top rows.
- Accepts: true or false, in any case, or yes, y, t or 1 for true and no, n, f, 0 or off for false
- Default:
false - Ink/Stitch: same key, meaning and default
underlay_underpath
Underlay underpath. Travel between the underlay’s rows runs inside the fill, under the underlay rows sewn after it. Off, the needle travels along the fill’s outline.
- Accepts: true or false, in any case, or yes, y, t or 1 for true and no, n, f, 0 or off for false
- Default:
true - Ink/Stitch: same key, meaning and default
